These chlorine ions are deadly harmful to the earth’s ozone layer. It can destroy huge amounts of ozone atoms which is the reason for world global warming.

Refrigerant CFCs in air conditioning devices have been used since 1928. In 2010, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) banned it for new uses.

In 2016, nearly 200 countries, including the United States, agreed to ban refrigerators with Freon or R-22. Subsequently, the Clean Air Act banned the production and export of Freon to the United States on January 1, 2020.

Are Freon Leaks in Your Home Dangerous?

Let me tell you a story at the beginning.

I have a neighbor who is very close to me. Suddenly I noticed that he was suffering from headaches, vomiting, and sore throat. And also, if I went to his house for a while, I would feel a little uncomfortable. My skin would get irritated.

Then one day, I discovered a chloroform-like odor around his air conditioner. Then my neighbor friend called an expert and found out that there was a Freon gas leak. In this case, he was released from a major accident.

Freon has no flammability of its own. But it is affected by the oxygen pressure in the air. Excessive oxygen pressure outside the refrigerant cylinder and high temperatures can also cause an explosion that can harm people in the house.

Is Freon Flammable or Explosive?

Although freons such as CFCs or HCFCs are not flammable at normal temperatures, it should not be said that they are not dangerous. It can also be the cause of explosions sometimes.

Freon is kept in a gaseous form at high pressure in a gas cylinder. If a gas cylinder ever leaks, the gaseous propellants will flow from high pressure to low pressure. Then if the air temperature gets higher, it will not be unusual for an explosion to occur. Such real examples we often see in newspapers, television, and social media.

  • Do not place Freon refrigerants next to sources of excess heat or fire.
  • Never keep the liquid refrigerant in a valve that cannot control the pressure or use a pressure regulator.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher in the house.
  • If you ever have a fire accident, be sure to look at the refrigerant cylinder before using the fire extinguisher.
  • After all, if you have a refrigerant application in your home, have it checked by a technician at least once a month and keep his cell number if necessary.

What Happens When Freon Explodes?

Cylinder debris can cause a hazard when the Freon-based cylinder explodes. Exposure to excess heat actually emits a toxic gas called phosphine which is flammable. Freon can spread toxicity even at temperatures below 1652 degrees Fahrenheit.

What refrigerants are highly flammable?

Many types of gas can be used as refrigerants. Halocarbon compounds are one of them. Moreover, ammonia, propane, butane, etc., are also used. These are not flammable at normal temperatures.

How do you neutralize Freon?

You can neutralize Freon from your HVAC system by using a reclaimer. This machine can capture freon.

The HVAC system usually needs to be charged after 10-15 days unless there is a leakage problem. Then a reclaimer must be used to prevent Freon from spreading into the environment. Take a step-by-step look at how Freon can be neutralized.

Step One:

Open the lid of the system’s High side valve and open both the recovery tank and king valve.

Step Two:

Turn on the recovery unit, press the condenser and receiver, push the liquid into the recovery tank.

Step Three:

When the liquid is removed, the vapor neutralization must begin with a reclaimer.
